Transparent Background For Text On A Picture

On a little sie project that I’ve been working on, I came across a layout problem that I was having a hard time finding a solution to. I wanted to show a picture and at the bottom have the name of a winery with a transparent background behind the name so that you could see the picture through it. I wanted to do this for a few reasons:

  1. It helps with the layout as I don’t have to worry (as much) about the color of the picture and the color of the font.
  2. It looks nice
  3. It seems like a fun challenge – this may actually be the main reason I wanted to do this…

At the end, this is what I ended up with

Our Bed Saga

So as some of you may know, we have been waiting for a new bed frame that we ordered in July. As we waited and waited for the bed, I thought it would be fun to write up the experience, but never really got around to it. Today, in a fit of furor, I finally put it all down on “paper.”

The point of this is not to sound petty, or to seek revenge against the makers of the bed. It really is just a place for me to vent my frustration about the situation and to document it.

Enjoy the read, but I should warn you, it’s long… Continue reading

Lewd Photoshopping To Be Illegal

So here is my first political post on the relaunched blog.

A State Representative from Georgia, Earnest Smith (D-Augusta), has introduced HB 39. If passed into law, it would mean “that a person commits defamation when he or she causes an unknowing person wrongfully to be identified as the person in an obscene depiction.” In other words, photoshopping someones head into porn.

While you may be saying that there are 1st Amendment ramifications here, the honorable Rep. has taken the step to use the key work “defamation.” Technically, defamation is not protected speech. However, this type of speech is quite funny.

The funny part to me is that a person would be wrongfully identified in the edited photos. Do you really think that President Obama and Mitt Romney stopped on the campaign last fall to engage in a little sexual horse play? (Questionable image after the link…) Continue reading

Henry’s First Trip To The Zoo

So this is more about testing out posting pictures here than anything else really. I’m quite curious what the new galleries look like in this version of Worpress.

These are pictures from Henry’s first trip to the Oakland Zoo. Hopefully you enjoy these as much as Henry enjoyed seeing the big animals…

4K Video

The big take away from CES this year – at least when it came to TV’s – was the coming 4K spec. The funny thing for me was watching the “negative” reactions to this coming technology. Akin to when we moved from standard def to high def – and I’m sure when we moved from black and white to color – the commentary was mainly of the “why do we need this?”-type. My response to them is we need this because it is better. Color is better than black and white. High def is better than standard def. 4K is better than high def.

The other complaint is that we don’t have any content for this new standard. While this is true today, just like with the HD roll out, content will come. Japan is already taking steps to make sure this happens. This is the push and pull of technology and what really excites me about the future. Someone creates a solution to a problem you didn’t know that you had. Think the personal computer, the smart phone, or even the TV.

Content will come once there are screens out there to display the content. The below youtube video shows that already. This is ink blobs in slow mo. This is an art piece. The videos I saw from CES showed that this is what was being displayed on the panels on the showroom floor. This is the same thing we saw with HD. First came the artsy slow mo pieces, then came the nature films, then sports, then regular TV.

I just wish that I had a monitor that could show all the pixels in this video. My advice to you is to crank the resolution of this video up as high as it can go and enjoy.

Write What You Know…

How many times have I started a blog and/or journal? Too many to count…

That being said, here I am again. This is my latest attempt to create an online presence and make myself “discoverable.” While a difficult task (google my name) I’ll see what I can accomplish. At the very least, this will be a site that I can point people to as I look for a new job.

So what will I write about? I plan on following the adage “write what you know.” I don’t know if this is truly an adage about writing, but it definitely works for me when it comes to investing. I’m not going to force myself to write about something that I don’t care about and hopefully, this will allow me to write more regularly. Topics will include baseball, wine, coffee, technology, Henry, and anything else that pops into my head.

I will also use this to try out new things and experiment. Coding is fun for me. Designing stuff is fun for me. And most importantly, learning new things is fun.

So here’s to another go at a blog and keeping this thing up and going.
